Why You Might Need a New AC

ac-replacementYou’re afraid it’s time to replace your AC, but you are not 100% sure. Nobody wants to do this any sooner than necessary—a new air conditioning system can run up high costs—but you don’t want to wait until the old one goes out in the middle of a Texas summer. How do you know when it’s the right time for replacing your old air conditioner? What are the warning signs you should look for? We’ll go over the three most common reasons indicating you could need a new AC system.

3 Reasons You Might Need a New AC

Keep in mind: One monthly electricity bill higher than normal or an unexpected repair doesn’t necessarily mean you need to install a new AC system right away. Contact your local AC experts to determine whether you’re better off maintaining your current system or if it really is time to invest in a new one.

1. Increasing Electricity Bills

You’re used to your electricity bills going up in the summer—it’s not like the cost of electricity ever goes down!—but if your year-over-year usage is also trending upward, that’s a clear warning sign. That’s because your AC system is likely requiring more power because it’s running less efficiently.

Maybe the cooling coils only need to be cleaned or more refrigerant added. Then again, it could be an indicator of a more serious, systemic problem. That’s why you’ll need a professional assessment to determine the best course of action.

2. More Frequent Repairs

Nothing runs maintenance-free, but your AC system is designed to be a workhorse, and if it’s regularly serviced, major repairs should be infrequent. If you start having problems more than once or twice a year, you should consider replacing the current unit.

That’s because ongoing maintenance adds up quickly: refrigerant leak detection and repair can be more than a quarter the cost of replacing the unit, and that’s also the case if you must replace a compressor or evaporator coil. Instead of continually putting more money into a system past its prime, you’ll be better off using that money to buy a new one.

3. System Over 12 Years Old

Even with regular maintenance, most AC systems have a lifespan of only 12–15 years. You might be able to squeeze out an extra year or two of service, but the cost-to-benefit ratio isn’t in your favor.

While your current AC may have no major problems, it won’t be as efficient as newer models which must have a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) rating of 13 or higher. Plus, your older unit likely uses R-22. This refrigerant is being phased out in favor of R-410A and is becoming more expensive and more difficult to find.

Maintaining Your New AC System

As we noted above, if you need a new AC system, that’s going to be a significant financial investment. Protect that investment with a regularly scheduled maintenance program. Our highly skilled and trained technicians have the know-how and equipment necessary to keep you cool during even the hottest Texas summers.
