3 Common Bathroom Plumbing Problems

leaking-bathroom-sink-pipeAre you having some problems with your bathroom’s plumbing? It most likely fits in one of the categories listed below. Luckily, these are problems that any reputable plumber should be able to fix without issue.

Low Water Pressure

There are many causes of low water pressure, from the pipes to the faucets themselves.

  • Hard Water: Hard water can create mineral buildup in your plumbing, and it can get so bad that it causes the water to come out of your faucets and fixtures at a low pressure.
  • Bad Faucets: If the problem is localized to your bathroom’s sink, it could be an issue with the faucet itself. Faucets rely on several small pieces that can be affected by the previously mentioned mineral build-up, or the pieces could just wear out over time.
  • Leaks: There could be a leak that’s preventing the water from coming out at full-force. The leak might not be located in the bathroom, so the best thing might be to turn off all the water-using appliances and check the water meter for activity. A moving dial would be a positive sign of a leak.

Clogged Toilet or Drains

Clogs are some of the most common plumbing problems anywhere in the home, but for the bathrooms, the causes may be unique.

  • Bathtubs and Showers: Clogs in these drains are often the result of not just hair, but soap. Soaps contain oils, and sometimes fats, both of which are the main perpetrators of clogs. After the drain gets sticky from the oil and fat, hair and other substances can get stuck, forming the surface of a clog.
  • Toilets: Toilet clogs can happen when people use the toilet to dispose of non-flushable substances. Floss, gum, and hygienic products are sometimes carelessly flushed down the toilet, eventually causing a clog in the sewage drain line.
  • Sinks: Most sinks are guarded with a drain stopper, making it difficult for trash to go inside them. Of course, this doesn’t exclude the possibility that beard shavings and soap can create a clog. In the event your sink is clogged and you can’t figure out why, it could be the sewer line is the problem.

Leaks in the bathroom will come from the fixtures themselves and may point to the need for replacement. Even if the constant drip, drip, dripping of a leaky faucet doesn’t bother you, it can eventually lead to hundreds of dollars in annual water bill costs.

  • Showerhead or Shower/Bathtub Faucet: These parts hold water with pressure, so a worn-out seal or O-ring can cause water to leak out. Instead of trying to turn the faucet handle tighter—and possibly causing damage—find out the root of the problem by calling a plumbing company in Allen, TX.
  • Water-Shutoff Valves for the Sink and Toilet: These valves aren’t supposed to be used too often, so the rubber seals inside them might be cheap and prone to breaking after some years of use. If you’ve got a leak, minimize the spread of water as much as you can and call a plumber to help you replace it.
